Running a vehicle on vegetable oil will not only save you some cash but also help the environment. However there is a lot to consider before commencing this.

Any car that runs on diesel fuel can be customized to run on straight chip fat (SVO). But it's not as easy as pouring used fryer oil in your fuel tank. The engine may start, but because engine oil is between 11-17 times thicker than conventional diesel fuel, using SVO in your existing diesel tank will cause problems with emissions, fuel efficiency and ultimately, engine health.

To burn SVO efficiently, the diesel engine must be converted to pre-heat the oil. SVO only becomes thin enough to pump into the engine and burn efficiently if it has been heated to 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Typically, this is done by adding a heat exchanger, a secondary fuel tank and a three-way valve to allow for easy switching between the standard diesel fuel tank and the secondary SVO tank.

Unless you really know your way around an engine, the simplest way to convert your engine to run on SVO is to purchase a conversion kit, and take it to a certified installer.

Even after the system is installed, however, this doesn't mean you'll never touch diesel fuel again. It's always best to start up a cold engine by using your diesel tank; once the SVO fuel has been heated sufficiently, you can turn the selector switch over and use the secondary tank.

Before shutting off the motor, turn the selector switch back over to the diesel tank for a few minutes and clear the vegetable oil from your engine. If you fail to do so, the engine will be clogged with cold oil, requiring it to be reheated before the engine will run efficiently again. Some SVO systems even include a "backflush" feature that clears the cooling oil out of the engine and pushes it back into the secondary tank. In colder climates, preheating the SVO tank and fuel lines becomes even more imperative before use, as the oil can become extremely thick, or even solidify.

Vegetable oil pushes out carbon deposits from your engine, so you will need to pay close attention to how it runs during the first few months after installation of an SVO system. Take your car in for regular check-ups.

After a few months, bring your car in and get the fuel injection system and engine pistons cleaned. Also, when the engine starts operating sluggishly, it may be time to change the fuel filter.
